Кратеры формируются на существующей поверхности, которая продолжит изменяться в будущем. Например, Ламберт (Lambert), шириной 30 км, образован на лавовых полях Моря Дождей (Mare Imbrium) и вершина кратера с выбросами явно лежат на поверхности моря. Несколько последующих случайных ударов создали несколько кратеров на этих отложениях, по крайней мере два небольших кратера внутри Ламберта.
