Ina Imaged!

Ina is such a small feature (3 km diameter) of such low relief (30 m) that it is L99 in my Lunar 100 list where objects are generally arranged from easiest to most difficult. It is very difficult to visually see Ina and has been almost unphotographable from Earth.

SMART-1, which has been called SLOW-1 because of its 13.5 month-long voyage to the Moon has finally started imaging the surface. This is one of the images released by ESA showing data taken on the first close approach in early January.

The south pole region of the Moon is a dramatic cacophony of craters and peaks. Extreme foreshortening and rugged topography make navigation here difficult. And that is just for observers, wait until lunar prospectors try mining ice in future decades!

The earliest drawings of the Moon were of the entire body. By 1665 Robert Hooke, the English rival of Isaac Newton, published (in his Micrographia) the first drawing of a single feature, and it was remarkably accurate.

Impact basins are characterized by a family of features such as multiple rims, concentric fractures and ridges, a central depression, radial markings, and extensive ejecta deposits. This list results not from a single perfect basin, but from recognizing consistent patterns in all the Moon's basins.

Do you consider Lacus Mortis - The Lake of Death - a crater? Because of the mare-like term "lacus" some observers just see it as a patch of mare material linking Mare Frigoris and Lacus Somniorum.

Posidonius is a beacon of interest along the otherwise bland north-eastern shore of Serenitatis. The large (95 km wide, 2.3 km max depth crater may have originally looked like Copernicus with broad terraced walls and a scattering of peaks centered on a deep, flat floor. But that's not how it looks now!
